In her later years, she volunteered to serve as a missionary in India, where she died. Charlotte Tucker was born at Friern Hatch near Friern Barnet, Middlesex. She was the daughter of Henry St George Tucker who was twice elected chairman of the British East India Company, and his wife Jane Boswell, the daughter of an Edinburgh author of the signet. Her family fled to London in 1822. Her father was also a writer, he wrote books of Tragedies: Harold and Camoens. Most of Charlotte's very inspiring novels are situated in India. A few were interpreted into Indian dialects. She worked in India as a volunteer missionary to Amritsar, Punjab, through the Indian Female Normal School and Instruction Society.
